Indian SC seeks report on trial of Pakistani prisoners

NEW DELHI: The Indian Supreme Court on Friday directed the Centre and the government of Indian-held Kashmir to present a report on Pakistani prisoners being held in various prisons.
The Supreme Court bench, consisting of Justice Tarun Chatterjee and Justice RM Lodha, expressed concern on the governments’ failure to implement the court’s orders regarding expediting prisoners’ trials. Last year on November 10, the SC had directed the federal and IHK governments to complete the trial of 25 Pakistani prisoners within a year. But the IHK government had failed to inform the court on the status of the trials.
The court further asked the central government to present a comprehensive report on deportations of the prisoners after their trials were completed. The prisoners’ counsels argued that most of the convicts had completed their sentences and asked for their immediate deportation.
